I tried to read it recently and after slogging through the first 120 pages and then searching around for reviews that said it didn't get going until after 200 pages and feeling very grumpy about having to slog that long, I returned the book to the library. It's too bad all the early backstory turns out not to even be important. Why didn't it get edited out I wonder?Stefaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14943596258182968212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3749031091155130228.post-30158422390157739302012-06-08T05:44:38.245-07:002012-06-08T05:44:38.245-07:00Haha, I'm going to use that sometime--"th...Haha, I'm going to use that sometime--"the The Tom Jones of it." There are a lot of established authors who get away with loose (or superfluous) narrative structure based on their previous success and their extended fanbase. Kinda like George Lucas for movies. Every successful author needs someone that will slap them on the back of the head and say "No!" every once in a while.

That said, I really do want to know all the juicy spoilers. C'mon man, be a rebel. Spill on the good stuff. It would depend on the reader and their patience. I am a tenacious reader. I rarely put anything down, so I'm willing to slog through so serious morass. If you like sci-fi and Victorian settings and if you have a good handle on the work of H.G. Wells, yeah, I'd recommend it.Ryanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07998996750944114185noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3749031091155130228.post-48384486252622444462012-06-07T14:06:22.885-07:002012-06-07T14:06:22.885-07:00This is the first positive review for this book th...This is the first positive review for this book that I've seen. I guess most people weren't as forgiving of those first 200 pages and back story. So would you recommend skimming the first bit or just tolerating it to get to the good stuff?Jennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05738740015526095835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3749031091155130228.post-30906694125470202502012-06-07T08:17:23.871-07:002012-06-07T08:17:23.871-07:00I feel like I'm struggling through The Solitar...I feel like I'm struggling through The Solitary House with many of the same feelings. That and the writing is just sort of bad. We shall see. I've had my eye on this one even though I'm generally not a science fiction/fantasy fan. Loved the cover though.

Palma has another book, The Map of the Sky, coming this autumn. Again, the cover is eye-catching, but the size of the book (600 pages) makes me think Palma has again overdone the backstory.Gandergelfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07282534019040801974noreply@blogger.com
