Thinking about when occurs for me, as it sounds like it did for you, is when I realize that a character and situation is infused with a healthy dose of irony. It sounds like that is true of Major Pettigrew. Some of the best writers are subtle enough about to keep the reader a little unsure, at least at first, if they are serious or not.
